West End theatre is a popular term for mainstream professional
theatre staged in the large theatres of London's
"Theatreland".
Total attendances first surpassed 12 million in 2002, and in
June 2005
The West End is the largest theatre district in the world and
is the epicentre of British commercial theatre. The West End
originally took its name from the fact that it was situated to
the West of the City of London. In more recent times the
definition of the theatre district has changed, as is explained
below.
It is true to say that London Theatreland is famous the world
over. It is home for a large number of great and historical
theatre houses, these houses played host to a great and
exciting range of plays and musicals. Perhaps the first and
best-known theatre in London is the Globe Theatre. The Globe
Theatre is in fact south of the river and not in Theatreland.
The Globe Theatre is the most famous of Shakespeare’s theatres
which has now been restored back to its former glory. There is
nothing more magical than spending a sunny English evening in
the open air Theatre at the Globe watching one of Shakespeare’s
timeless plays performed by some of the Britains best
actors.
If you wish to book theatre tickets for any of London’s shows
it is worth knowing that highly discounted tickets are often
available. It is best to use a reputable booking agent and not
a street tout. London has a famous half price ticket booth
which is situated right in the middle of Leicester Sq, by
visiting this you are able to obtain tickets for all the best
west end shows at up to 50% discount.
There is such a wide variety of shows, musicals, comedies and
plays always available in London that there is always bound to
be something to please every taste.
